One of the things we did to study the effects of differing lighting situations was paint this stem of broccoli. It went like this:

First the broccoli is strong light.
Then we blocked in the pecan tree. 

then the tree painting

I did mine on a gray day and did not get the colors as intense as they should have been.  It leans a little too much also, but if you pretend that it is a bonsai....

Just a quick word

Most important, Dean has taken the last of the steroids and his blood sugar is back to a reasonable (non-insulin requiring) range. He goes to kidney doctor tomorrow for blood work; I think it will show improvement.   Sometimes the weeds are as pretty as the flowers. Isn't this one sweet? The siding is going up and will be finished this week. The final paint color will be a little lighter than this - more like the mortar color ;" buff," I guess it would be called.   The decking has been ordered and is in and the fasteners are on the way. There will be a rail and, on the far side, there will be steps. The hostas have taken a beating but I think that they will survive and be beautiful under the big tree. Once the outside is finished we have lots to do inside. I am calling tomorrow about the flooring. We are considering marmoleum - red! There is no dealer here so we will have to work with someone in Knoxville about an hour up the interstate.  ...

So much to learn and do

I am cautiously optimistic about the kitchen. I think it will be finished before the year is up and will be usable before then - I plan to cook Thanksgiving dinner there! Next week the stone people are coming to measure for countertops; the appliances should arrive later in the week also. I am so excited. If I can just get my plumber to quit going off in different directions I will also have a sink soon. Today he installed a light at the back door. It was nice to come home to a lighted porch, but the project, which he said would take an hour took much longer. Then he had to go over to the shop because one of his buddies gave us his old camper. I haven't seen it. Maybe I will use it as a studio - it has running water, a bathroom and heat after all! See the lovely light? Right now it has a 100 watt bulb because that was all that was handy, but with that white reflector it will give plenty of light with many fewer watts. Up the stairs and down again.

This old house has ceilings that are about nine and one-half feet high. That means that there are 17 steps from one floor to the next. Today I decided that I had to take all the Christmas decorations up to the attic after making one last sweep through the house for forgotten little doodads. I carried up 11 loads. I had no idea that we had so many decorations. Actually, some of the boxes were quite light as they were fitted out for tree ornaments, most of which are feather-light. Still, by the time I finished, my knees were complaining. Oh, yes, the quilt on the wall is one I made years ago and the only one of mine to have been published in a quilting book. It is covering the place where we cut an opening for the whole house fan.  Here is a closeup. Well, it is kinda close up. I was standing on the steps.
